The Cause of Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder is an overwhelming condition that seriously affects how you live your life.  It produces feelings often described as fear, worry or tension and these feelings end up controlling the way you behave.

At present time experts believe that social anxiety can have its roots in the genetic code.  This has been proposed after observing higher probability of appearance in people who have family with social anxiety too.

Another factor could be the social experiences people have had in their lives; it is possible that after certain situation people develop social anxiety disorder.  This is specially true in cases where people have grown ignored, rejected or bullied.

As parents one can have also certain responsibility at the development of social anxiety.  Parents who give excessive weight to the opinion of others or discipline their kids with shame all contribute to it.  The same with parents who are overprotecting.

On the biological side, besides the genetic influence, it can be triggered by an imbalance of the neurotransmitter serotonin.  If these neurotransmitters are not balanced it could affect the way the brain reacts to stressful situations, leading to anxiety.

Although these situations are play an important role in the development of the condition, there is no single cause of social anxiety disorder that can be pinpointed.  A professional such as psychotherapist or psychiatrist can help you assess the root of the problem and help you seek treatment according to that, specially when you need medicine.

But what most people say to have in common is negative images in the mind. That’s why meditation and relaxation exercises seem to have worked for people with this disorder.  These activities help freeing the mind of clutter that doesn’t contribute to our growth.
